Mass Street

Massachusetts Street, referred to by the locals as "Mass Street" or "Mass," is the main street running through the central business district of downtown Lawrence. Mass begins just south of the Kansas or "Kaw" River at Sixth Street and continues south until reaching Haskell Indian Nations University. Not only is Mass the place to go for the best restaurants, shops, and excitement in Lawrence, it's also chalked full of historical significance. Most of the buildings between the the 600 through 1200 block of Mass were built between 1856 and 1953 and are listed on the National Register of Historical Places under Lawrence's Historical District. The Eldridge Hotel (former Free State Hotel built in 1855 by settlers from the New England Emigrant Aid Society), the Douglas County Courthouse (founded in 1855), the Watkins Museum of History (a former Land Mortgage Company and Watkins National Bank constructed in 1888), and the Castle Tea Room (a Scottish immigrant-built Victorian Romanesque revival home built in 1894) are also listed. Other buildings rich with history along Mass include Liberty Hall (Kansas' first abolitionist newspaper, built in 1856--now an independent art-house film theater, concert hall, video store, and coffee house), the Free State Brewing Company (Kansas' first legal brewery since Prohibition), the Round Corner Pharmacy (the longest-running pharmacy in the state until closing in 2009, now the RND Corner Grill), the House Building (the only downtown building to survive Quantrill's Raid), The Granada (built in 1928 as a vaudville theater, turned into a silent movie theater in 1034, and now a live music venue known for hosting famous artists such as the Flaming Lips, Weezer, Ben Folds, Marilyn Manson, Smashing Pumpkins, Rusted Root, John Mayer, Blink 182, The Roots, The Killers, The Strokes and more), The First National Bank of Lawrence (robbed by the infamous Clyde Barrow of Bonnie and Clyde, now home to Merchants Pub and Plate), South Park (a city park established when the town was first founded in 1854, location of Art in the Park, the Lawrence Fall Arts and Craft Festival, Lawrence City Band concerts, the Lawrence Zombie Walk, and other fun festivals and events), and Liberty Memorial Central Middle School (located in a former high school built in 1923). Home owners near Mass St. never run out of history, shops, or eateries to explore!

Easy access to Interstate-70.
